The first comprehensive population census of the country was completed in 1871-72, and thereafter a regular chin of decenial enumeration was established. And now, 1971 marks the completion of hundred years of regular decennial census taking in India, and the census enumeration commences on the 10th March, 1971.
The stamp depicts a cross section of the people of India within the figure one hundred representing the census century.
