The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is a government organization. GSI is the prime provider of basic earth science information to the government, industry and the general public. The main services/information provided by GSI are

The Geological Survey of India was established in the year 1851. To commemorate the centenary of GSI a special was released on 13-Jan-1951. The stamp depicts extinct Stegodon Ganesa. Stegodon means roofed teeth. This extinct species comes under the elephant family. It is said that these species lived about 11.6 mya (million years ago) to 4100 years ago. Stegodon Ganesa type were found in the Asian region.
