Kitturu Rani Chennamma (born 23 October 1778 in
Kakati, Belgaum District, Karnataka, India – died 21 February 1829) was the Queen
of Kittur, a princely state in South India. She was best known for leading an
armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824. The resistance
ended with her arrest and she became a symbol of the independence movement in
India. In the state of Karnataka, she is celebrated along with Abbakka Rani, Keladi
Chennamma and Onake Obavva.
Even in captivity Rani Channamma pined for Kittur's
freedom and tried to organize the forces of neighbouring rulers to carry on the
fight. Thevalour, sacrifice and indomitable spirit displayed by her from a
glorious chapter in the nation's history. The Posts and Telegraphs Department
salutes the memory of one of the brave and distinguished daughters of India by
issuing this Commemorative Postage Stamp.
The stamp depicts
a view of the statue of Kittur Rani Channamma on horse-back erected in Belgaum
(Karnataka).
